Want to be a writer?
April 22nd, 2008 by Vanessa
One of the most common things that people tell me in the bookshop is that they’d like to write a book if only they had the time/knew where to start/could think of an idea or that that they’ve written a book and don’t know what to do next.
Well, would be writers of Edinburgh, ponder no more. Steve Augarde – author of The Various trilogy – will be visiting the bookshop on Thursday 8th May at 7.30pm to talk about the joys and problems of writing for children and young adults and to give plenty of practical advice on how to get your work in front of an agent or a publisher. He’ll also be talking about his highly acclaimed books – The Various won the Smarties prize, the sequel, Celandine, was nominated for the Carnegie Medal and the recently published Winter Wood is the best book I’ve read so far this year. Steve is already successful and if there’s any justice in the world he’s going to be huge so this is a great opportunity to listen to him.
Do come and listen to Steve and if you want to know the standard you need to be aiming for you can even buy one of his books and ask him to sign it! Tickets are free but do collect one or phone/email to reserve one in advance please.
Sorry, I’ve tagged you for a meme. Come to my blog to read the rules!
I read your post and thought I’d love to go to this – but the realised I’m working away that week, for the first time in months. Huh. Oh well, another time.
I want to write. I want to write. I want to write. I do write.
The problem is do other people want to read it?
What I need is for a publisher to want to read what I write….sigh….
Oh well, Edinburgh is much too far away unfortunately…I do like listening to other writers. Sigh…
What happened to the ‘A New Book for Fidra’ competition? Did it fail to yield any fruit, are you still ploughing through the entries, or has everything else just pushed it onto the back burner? I’d love to know!
