Best Headline of 2006

“Ferrets: more fun than a Play Station”

The number of adolescents who would prefer to unwrap a ferret on December 25th rather than Sony’s latest offering must be huge!

When my younger daughter was about 3 she spent hours with friends whose Dad kept ferrets – they were called Rambo and Jennifer and she loved them to bits.. she never knew what they were actually FOR though…

We had a ferret called Bobby who would share the guinea pig run but crucially NOT at the same time. The mistake happened the day the run looked empty and the ferret was put in for some exercise upon which he immediately shot into the drainpipe which was his favourite bit where he found 2 sleeping guinea pigs. It was a very expensive vet’s trip to repair guinea pig noses.Bobby eventually became very tame and would follow you round the garden but it was a ruse and one day he cleverly just kept walking and was never seen again.

There you go – seems I was wrong. Ferrets really are more fun than a Play Station!

I’ve never come face to face with a ferret but I did get bitten by a squirrel in the Botanics in Edinburgh once if that counts?

And Vanessa you haven’t lived if you haven’t seen ferret racing. A network of individual drain pipe runs, place your bets, in they go and we’re off and you wait and see which one pops out the other end first. It’s big down here in the West Country!

A Botanics squirrel came into my garden (many do) and kindly dropped a slice of toast for one of my dogs…. No ferrets here, though.
