As regular readers will know, it’s been a hectic few weeks at Fidra (we’re now considering calling ourselves an umbrella organisation, we’ve got so many projects on the go!), with two private views for our shiny new gallery. Vanessa, Polly and I spent a large portion of the week before the opening hanging pictures, then rehanging them when we realised they’d need to be an inch to the left. It was all worth it when we’d finished, though, because the pictures looked stunning.

We had our private views on the Thursday and Friday nights, and it was great to see a lot of people admire paintings that we at Fidra have fallen more than a little bit in love with over the last few months. A few of our illustrators, including Catherine Rayner, Melanie Williamson and Lizzie Finlay were able to come, which was especially gratifying.

Melanie Williamson and Lizzy Finlay , with Lizzie’s Dandylion above her, and Melanie’s Rise and Shine Zebras on her right.

If you look closely you can see Gill in the red. The picture behind her is Banana by Ed Vere.

Local author Gill Arbuthnott, and the gorgeous painting on her right is by Jackie Morris.

We munched on splendid canapes, expertly prepared by our newest member of staff, Jane (homemade blinis!), drank a wee bit of fizz and chatted to friends. I don’t think I fully realised until that Thursday what an amazing job Polly has done in getting us such a variety of truly beautiful pieces of artwork; in fact, it’s going to be hard to let them go! We at Fidra feel very strongly that illustration work is art, often of an exceptionally high quality – you only need to take a look at one of our walls to see it.

See the yummy canapes! The elephant eyeing them up is by Petr Horacek.

Malcolm on the right, holding the wine and looking almost Excessively Jolly.

Our talented designers, Emma and Andy Quinn.

It’s gratifying to see that something Vanessa and Malcolm thought up in the car one evening last year has come to fruition so successfully; if you’re hoping to buy a picture, whether online or in person, I would do so as soon as possible, going by the amount we’ve already sold!

It looks great! Malcolm does look rather jolly holding the two bottles of wine I must say, maybe he had to test the wine first! Also I spy Nessa in one of the pictures trying to hide behind someone. Nice try! Congratulations on a great new venture. Takecare
