Bookseller Retail Awards: Here We Are!
July 31st, 2009 by Vanessa
This week, The Bookseller has a focus on the various people and companies that have been shortlisted for one of their awards to be presented in September – did I mention that we get to have dinner at the Natural History Museum, right next to the big dinosaurs? Oh I did. Sorry to go about that. Anyway you can read the piece here and if you scroll down you’ll see who we’re up against – they all sound very impressive and we’re really not expecting even a sniff at the trophy but it’s lovely to be shortlisted. We’re in the Children’s Independent category and we’ll also be rooting for The Mainstreet Trading Company who are short-listed in the general Independent Bookshop category along with several other worthy contenders.
And to that end we’re practising our gracious loser faces (head slightly on one side, rueful smile, trying to look delighted for the winner) although one of our local authors told me that it’s also important to practise one’s gracious loser clapping - a little slower than normal with a ‘well done; a worthy winner’ type of feel to it. Maybe a little sincere nodding. And just in case we do win, I will have a list of our ‘thank-yous’ in my bag to read out as otherwise I will just blub incoherently and nobody wants to witness me doing a full Gwyneth.
But none of them have the added value of their very own publishing company as well! Who gets to choose and how? Can we vote somewhere? No? Oh well, pawsitive purrs and thoughts from afar!
